Both San Francisco and Vancouver have great natural harbors and have become major world class ports for the shipment of goods between Asia and North America
Both have two of the largest historic Chinese populations in North America / Chinatowns - attracting Chinese from China initially during the California Goldrush then later the Goldrush in the Klondike and interior of British Columbia in the 1800's.
Both are economic centres for business as well as the high-tech economic sectors.
Both cities are world class tourist destinations.
